Conveniently located to serve the areas of New York, NY
Plastic surgery for men is rapidly gaining popularity as the stigma associated with getting “work done” is diminishing. Over the past few years, more men have undergone these transformative procedures to improve their appearance and overall confidence in their personal and professional lives. It is not only individual surgeons noticing this trend; the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) found that between the years 1997 and 2018, the rate at which men underwent plastic surgery increased by 55%. (1) With modern techniques, surgeons can now help men feel proud of more athletic contours and more youthful, refreshed facial features.

How Often Are Men Undergoing Plastic Surgery?
In general, men may be more hesitant and unsure when deciding whether or not to undergo plastic surgery. As a field of medicine that generally caters to women’s desires, it can feel intimidating for a man to consider a cosmetic procedure to improve his looks. Still, there is more acceptance among men nowadays, and research supports this finding. One 2016 study from the ASPS found that, on average, almost 1 in every 12 patients undergoing elective surgery is a man. In Dr. Sherman’s practice, 20% of his patients are men.
The most up-to-date techniques have allowed surgeons to create lasting results that naturally match and enhance masculine features. There is never a one-size-fits-all approach to plastic surgery, and this same principle applies to every individual seeking more youthful rejuvenation, regardless of gender.
Male Procedures
Chin Augmentation
A chin augmentation with a biocompatible, silicone implant can give you a more defined, chiseled jawline that improves your overall facial profile. Dr. Sherman will help you find the best-suited size in alignment with your facial proportions and expressed desires. For this outpatient procedure, he will make an incision within the submental area underneath the chin or a small incision within the inner lip. He will then form a small tissue pocket for the implant to rest in, ensuring that it creates a smooth, natural transition from the chin to the jaw. Once the procedure is complete, no follow-up procedure will ever be required, and the implant will sustain results permanently.
Male Liposuction
Male liposuction is designed to create a more sculpted, athletic appearance that you may strive to achieve. The procedure usually centers around removing fat in the abdominal area and chest- the areas where you may be more likely to store fat. Dr. Sherman will only need to create small incisions of less than an inch in the treatment area and insert tumescent fluid to loosen the fat to prepare it for removal. He can then suction away the fat to reveal slimmer contours. For better-quality muscle definition, Dr. Sherman can apply ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL)- utilizing a type of vibrational energy- to more precisely break apart your specific fat deposits. Applying this energy can help you recover well with less bruising when compared to standard tumescent liposuction. (2) With UAL, Dr. Sherman can preserve small fat deposits and remove fat directly overlying the muscle, allowing him to highlight six-pack abs and more prominent pectoral muscles.
Gynecomastia Treatment
In many cases, UAL alone is sufficient to resolve the look of gynecomastia, a condition in which men develop more fat and glandular tissue in the chest. This is because the ultrasound is capable of breaking apart fibrous tissue which is characteristic of this condition. In some cases, the condition is severe enough to warrant a tiny incision next to the areola. Using this small opening, Dr. Sherman can remove the enlarged glandular tissue that liposuction cannot target. If you have gynecomastia, Dr. Sherman will be able to assess the best technique at your consultation to form the most natural-looking, masculine chest that you can feel more comfortable with.
Blepharoplasty
A blepharoplasty is a cosmetic eyelid surgery that involves trimming excess, drooping skin over the upper eyelid, or removing under-eye bags. Whether you have permanently puffy eyelids or a look that makes you appear tired and worn, a blepharoplasty can rejuvenate your eyes and present a more youthful-looking version of yourself. To resolve “hooded” eyes with an upper eyelid lift, Dr. Sherman will only need to make one horizontal incision within the crease of the eyelid, giving him access to remove tiny fat deposits and sagging skin. For a lower eyelid lift, he will only need to make a subtle incision just below the outline of the lower eyelid or within the inside of the eyelid, hiding any possible scarring. From there, he may shift or remove fat deposits and tighten underlying connective tissue to create a lifting effect. To transform both aspects of the eyes, he can custom-tailor a transconjunctival approach to address both the upper and lower eyelids within the same procedure. As one of the first features that others notice, reviving the eyes with this outpatient surgery can be incredibly beneficial to attaining a less aged look.
Facelift
A facelift, also called a rhytidectomy, involves lifting the contours of the face to reverse significant signs of aging along the jawline, cheeks, and mid-face. Although it may sound like an intensive procedure, Dr. Sherman only needs to utilize small incisions around the ears to lift and tighten a section of subcutaneous connective tissue called the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) to create an all-natural, even elevation of the face. Research finds that, on average, facelifts maintain results for around 12 years. (3) Patients can expect to age slower once the rejuvenating results begin to wear off. Forehead lifts can eliminate folds and sagging of the upper face, helping resolve descended brows characteristic of more aged men. For this procedure, Dr. Sherman will choose between an endoscopic approach (with small incisions near the hairline and the use of a surgical camera) or a coronal approach that requires one larger incision, producing a more dramatic effect after recovery.
Otoplasty
Many men are bothered by their ears and feel as if they are unattractive or detract from their appearance overall. Some people have prominent ears, meaning that they protrude outward from the head and can be a source of self-consciousness. For men, especially, this can be an issue since many prefer to wear their hair short, making the ears much more noticeable. For one, prominent ears often lack natural folding in the antihelix- the upper portion- so the ears appear flat and smooth. In many cases, the concha, or opening of the ear canal, is too large or the entire ear itself is too large for the head. (4)
Otoplasty is a surgery that permanently fixes these contour irregularities and the positioning of the ears. If you have any problems with the structural differences in your ears, Dr. Sherman can correct all related cosmetic issues. His techniques involve making a tiny incision in the back of each ear, applying permanent sutures to the cartilage, and cartilage removal in some cases. A few days after the procedure, Dr. Sherman will schedule a follow-up appointment to remove external sutures and prescribe a headband for you to wear to protect the ears as they continue to heal. Within 2 to 3 weeks, the final results will have settled in completely.
